Why Did Adventure Time Title Cards Descend Into MADNESS?

Distant Lands is finally here, but Adventure Time's original series still had a lot to love. The title cards descended into absolute madness and nightmare fuel throughout its episodes - The Lich, I Remember You, and more - but why? How did they transform in this Cartoon Network classic?
